Having a tickle in your throat and a cough can be very irritating and uncomfortable, especially when it happens at the worst possible moment. Next time when you find yourself in such a situation, just eat a piece of dark chocolate.
Aline Maurice, a professor and head of the department of cardiovascular and respiratory studies at the University of Hull (United Kingdom), came to the conclusion that chocolate really works better for a sore throat and dry cough than some other prescription-free medicines.
Recent studies have shown that patients who took medicine with cocoa extract in it recovered much faster (within 2 days) than those who took conventional cough syrup. Another study conducted at Imperial College in London discovered that cocoa contains alkaloid, which has a cough-reducing effect superior to codeine, a substance widely used as an antitussive.
It has a logical explanation: chocolate’s texture is stickier than regular cough medicines, meaning that it is better at coating your throat and triggering nerve endings that protect it from incessant coughing.
Further studies will have to be carried out in this regard, but we here at Bright Side have decided to go ahead and test this tasty theory on ourselves.
